A Discovery of Witches - Deborah Harkness I'm giving this book four stars because it starts off a little slow. There's a lot of world building in the beginning, but it pays off in the rest of the book. The story follows Diana Bishop, a witch who refuses to use her powers after her parents' murder when she was seven years old. She becomes a historian and somehow finds a book that's been lost for 150 years in a library at Oxford. This book starts all kinds of trouble with witches, daemons and even vampires. They all want it for their own reasons - but what's the big deal? It's just a book, right? One of the vampires, Matthew Clairmont, takes a special interest in Diana. Does he just want the book too or is it something else? And how can a historian resist a 1500 year old vampire - just think of the things he's seen and people he's known!I'm really glad the next book in the trilogy comes out next month - I can't wait to see what happens!
