The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - Mary Ann Shaffer, Annie Barrows I'd give this 2 1/2 stars - it's enjoyable for the most part and a fast read, but there were some times where the format of the book and individual letters really annoyed me. The book is written as a collection of letters between several characters, which is mostly fine, but there are sections where the author has to jump through some hoops to explain the story. It's weird to read a letter from Juliet (the main character) to Sidney (her publisher) who just visited her in Guernsey recounting their visit. Uh, he was there, he knows what you did and talked about. I also really disliked the letter that revealed that Sidney had no romantic interest in Juliet because he's gay. Really? A man in 1946 isn't just going to come out of the closet to a complete stranger because she asked if he's going to marry Juliet. I felt like the author was trying way too hard to make all the characters in the book lovable misfits instead of letting them develop naturally; that they all had to have something quirky and special and that ended up feeling forced in spots. The bigger picture is a pretty good book. Not my favorite, but not bad either. Overall, I'd recommend this book to someone looking for a quick, fun read to take with them on vacation or for someone looking for a light read.
